Since 2001, Veiling Hoogstraten has offered its pepper growers the possibility of having their produce sorted centrally on the auction site. After steady growth of the acreage, in 2004 it was decided to invest heavily in the project, so that Veiling Hoogstraten now how one of the most automated and efficient pepper sorting facilities in Europe. With the realisation of this project, Veiling Hoogstraten has confirmed its confidence in the future of pepper cultivation in the region and on the other hand, they are playing the card of central sorting as a service provider for buyers and producers.

Over the last 6 years, the project has contributed to reinforcing Veiling Hoogstraten's position as the largest Belgian pepper auction. Central sorting played an important role in attracting market segments. Buyers appreciate the short lead time between demand for different packaging and/or sorting and delivery as an important benefit. On the other hand, flexible work organisation, which contributes to a large extent to realising these short response times, allows flexible arrivals. In this way, every grower continues to have a major impact on the time when his product is offered on the clock.
The vast majority of the sorted produce is sold via the clock. The remainder is marketed through LAVA (Logistics and Administrative Auction Association) via intermediaries. The central sorting project is steering its own course, but from the sales, logistics and quality viewpint, forms an integral part of the operation of the auction at Hoogstraten.
